Christmas charity single: Fucked Up’s indie extravaganza

In the wake of Portishead’s wonderful new charity song, here’s another one to digest – this time from Canadian Polaris Prize winning punk group Fucked Up. It’s a cover of “Do They Know It’s Christmas”, originally performed by Bob Geldof’s charity musical collective Band Aid. The band reputedly spent the majority of its $20,000 Polaris cheque on funding the guest appearances on the single, which include Tegan & Sara, Yo La Tengo, GZA from the Wu-Tang Clan, Ezra Koenig, Andrew W.K., TV On The Radio’s Kyp Malone, Bob Mould of Husker Du, Broken Social Scene’s Kevin Drew, and comedian Dave Cross.

The original version of this song can become bothersomely ubiquitous at this time of year, but the Fucked Up ft. The World of Indie rendition is actually quite super. Listen to it online here, and then buy it on iTunes here to support not just one, but three good causes: Justice for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, DTES Power of Women Group, and Sisters in Spirit.
