Ahead of a soon to be released debut album, Manchester-via-Gloucester songwriter Chloe Foy returns with a new single, “Left-Centred Weight”. She says:
“It’s about feeling that everyone’s going to die, which comes about from having grieved once before. But ultimately coming to terms with it and making peace.”
Tackling the heady topic of dealing with mortality of a young age and the existential thought process that comes with it, Foy deals with weighty topics with grace and calm, much like she has approached the subjects of her previous releases.
Sweeping into view with sweet, warm strings, Foy glides along like she’s riding a cooling summer breeze. At the centre is her soft voice; both reassuring and motherly in tone, it brings a brightness with it on every note. “Go easy brain,” she offers repeatedly as the centrepiece to her lyrics, and it bundles everything together, gathering all the worry and sorrow into a mantra of self-care. Lifted by those aforementioned strings, “Left-Centred Weight” ebbs and flows into a marvellous and lightly sumptuous track that bolsters hope for the day and chases away any darkness.
And, just at the very end of the song, we hear what sounds like another track bleeding into the mix, a low note bowed on a cello acting as what sounds like a bridge to another movement. Let’s hope we get the hear “Left-Centred Weight” in an album setting soon, where it will no doubt shine just as bright as it does on its own.
