The late and criminally under-appreciated Camu Tao will have his debut album King of Hearts released via Def Jux/Fat Possum on August 14th. Tero Smith’s death had a huge effect on the Def Jux family. Watching Aesop Rock perform the day after Smith’s passing, it became obvious that El-P’s gang of outlaw hip-hop stars were never going to be the same after his death. That being said, it’s great news that King of Hearts will finally see the light of day, hopefully garnering the respect that it deserves. All proceeds from the album go directly to the Smith family, so please pre-order or grab a t-shirt.
Mp3: Central Services – “Submarine”
El-P also released his collaborative EP with Camu Tao entitled Forever Frozen in Television. Recorded in 2005 under the group name Central Services, the album displays both artists supreme ability to blend genres and alter hip-hop ideology. Forever Frozen in Television is a transformative and abrasive album, more than worth a listen if you’re a fan of past Def Jux material. Check out one of my favorite cuts above or download the EP for free.
