British duo Blood Wizard are back with news of an EP called Imaginary House, arriving on September 13 through Moshi Moshi. They’ve shared the title track, saying:
“Whilst it wasn’t the first song written on the EP, it felt like the glue that finally stuck the EP together. I was going through this ‘limbo’ period in my life and Imaginary House encapsulated the aftermath of this claustrophobia. I’d lost touch with the outside world and the inside had become some sort of fantasy. I consider Imaginary House to be the walls that contain the other tracks and it was soon clear that it would be the title track of the EP.”
The song begins with the simple proclamation: “dead to the world I am”, delivered with deadpan honesty. It sums up the feeling and themes of the song; Blood Wizard are experiencing “ups and downs” and are “getting tired of the run-around”, Cai Burns’ vocals monotone with exhaustion. This becomes doubly true in the hook, “how nice to feel nothing”, which gets stuck in your head despite its decidedly stubborn delivery. Meanwhile, all around this central voice, Blood Wizard’s sonics warp the slacker sound into more psychedelic areas – it perfectly animates the unpredictability of the world the singer finds himself in, and we feel his fatigue as he clings to solid ground while everything keeps sliding out of control.
