The news is out: Big Boi, Caribou, and Jónsi have been added to this year’s Moogfest. They join the already-strong lineup of MGMT, Massive Attack, and Thievery Corporation. Although the full lineup was previously set to be unveiled today, that announcement has been postponed until August 10. A pop-up message on the official site explains this postponement:
We’ve had tremendous response to the festival – and from that, some new and exciting opportunities have emerged. We still need a little more time to put it all together, so we thought it best to wait so that we can share with everyone the full scope of the event. It is going to be an unforgettable weekend.
To keep fans and prospective festivalgoers satisfied until then, they unveiled this amazing trio of confirmed artists, suggesting the promising nature of the full lineup.
Moogfest is a festival that celebrates the world-famous Moog synthesizers, now a staple in modern music, and Bob Moog, the inventor who started it all. The festival promises “3 extraordinary days of music…plus exhibitions, installations, films, workshops, and discussions.”
In its short lifetime, Moogfest has been moved from New York City to the Southern town of Asheville, North Carolina. The move was a logical decision, considering Dr. Moog lived and taught in Asheville for many years until his death in 2005. Moog Music’s headquarters are still based in Asheville, and stopping by the Moog HQ has become a must for any touring musician passing through the city.
This year, Moogfest is set to take place in Asheville on Halloween weekend (October 29-31), making the event even more special. The festival has been adopted by AC Entertainment, the same game-changing music entertainment firm that brings you Bonnaroo and the recently-added Big Ears Festival, which takes place in the nearby city of Knoxville, Tennessee. Moogfest is likely to resemble Big Ears in mood and structure–a more intimate, educational affair, which is a refreshing take on music festivals in light of the popularity of the messy, crowded, big tent outdoors festivals.
If this sounds like your kind of festival, check back with Moogfest on their official website, or follow them on Twitter and Facebook. Ticket sales will begin on August 13.
