As is typical when an artist begins to announces a slew of festival appearances without an album to support (take note Animal Collective fans), a new record is usually right around the corner. So, news that Beirut has completed a third album, and first since 2007’s The Flying Club Cup, should not come as a complete surprise, but it should be met with much excitement, either way.
Recorded last winter in upstate New York, the currently untitled collection will be released “sometime this summer,” main-man Zach Condon told Hitfix. Condon describes the new record as “sunny. I write sad songs when it’s nice outside. I write warm and happy songs when I’m up to my neck in snow for three months.”
Condon added, “it’s almost like I’m crystallizing the sound that I’ve come to adapt. I’ve been very centered on what the Beirut sound actually is, and what is my voice and melody and my sense of rhythm. It’s been about maturing.”
In other Beirut news, Condon has also recorded a score for the upcoming documentary Bombay Beach, which will feature new tunes and old favorites. More on both releases as information becomes available. Check out the trailer for Bombay Beach below.
