beabadoobee only released her debut album Fake It Flowers in October, but the blossoming songwriter hasn’t been resting on her laurels – nor touring, for that matter. With the lockdown preventing any such activities, she found herself last summer hunkering down in the Oxfordshire countryside with her band and The 1975’s Matty Healy and George Daniel. Together, they wrote and recorded a whole new bunch of songs, which will be released as the Our Extended Play EP some time this Spring. She says:
“I wrote and recorded the EP on a farm with Matty and George from The 1975 in the countryside. It was really nice being able to create together, my first time writing and recording on a farm. I wanted to experiment on the sounds and sonics even more and the EP to me has a feeling of togetherness to it… how we’re all in this joined as one.”
The first song shared from the record is “Last Day On Earth”, about which beabadoobee says:
“Last Day On Earth is about all the things I would have done had I known we were going into a lockdown and the world was going to change the way it has. It was written shortly after the first main lockdown and lyrically it’s me reflecting on how it would feel if we all knew ahead of time what was going to happen. All the things I would have done if I knew it was the last day of our old normality.“
Fusing the melancholy of knowing the world is ending with the euphoria of knowing that it’s now or never to do what you’ve always wanted to do – no risk of consequence – “Last Day On Earth” is a pinwheeling dreampop delight. beabadoobee floats in a world of billowing synths and expansive percussion, letting her mind wander to all the things she wants to do – “I wanna get fucked up!” particularly hitting a nerve with those of us counting down the days until pubs re-open. Filled with an innocent glee and unbridled desire to have nothing but fun, “Last Day On Earth” is an early taste of what it will feel like on that day when we’re all allowed to frolic together again.
