There’s something that feels iconic about Canadian pop artist Baby Nova. Her song “Killed For Sport” is instantly mesmerizing because it’s not about boyfriends and breakups but instead tackles the serious topic of social media trolling. Every syllable in this song makes you feel the crushing weight of cyber-slander.
The artist says: “‘Killed For Sport’ is a song about being dismissed by others as ‘crazy’ or ‘mentally unwell’, and the pain it can cause. It’s a song about reclaiming your narrative from those trying to hijack it.”
The song was co-produced by Gus van Go (The Beaches), Baby Nova and artist/songwriter Lowell (who co-wrote Beyonce’s Grammy-nominated “Texas Hold ’Em”).
Baby Nova has one of those once-in-a-generation voices that will remind you a bit of Kim Carnes and Marianne Faithful’s “Broken English” period, but even more hypnotic. Not since the arrival of Amy Winehouse have I encountered a voice this distinctive and remarkable.
Baby Nova feels like a supernova, which the dictionary defines as “a powerful and luminous explosion of a star.” She’s a star alright, and her career is about to explode in a good way.
