Apple threatens to shut down iTunes store over royalty dispute

Apple’s iTunes music store, which accounts for over 80 percent of all digital music sales, may close up shop if it does not get to keep as large of a percentage of the royalties as they would like.

According to BBC News, the National Music Publishers’ Association has requested that royalty rates from iTunes’ 99-cent songs be increased from 9 cents to 15 cents, an approximately 66 percent increase. Apple executives have hinted that if such an increase were to be enacted, it would force the company to operate at a loss, and that they would consider shutting down the iTunes store.

Maybe now is the time to try to seek out a what.cd invite.
