Johnny Cash needs no introduction. The country legend with an enormous rock fan following is with us no longer, but he lives on in our record players, iPods, CD players and various other mediums in which we connect with him. Thanks to the Rick Rubin-produced American series, we have had the ability to listen to newer melancholic collections of Johnny Cash meditations since Cash’s death in 2003. American VI: Ain’t No Grave will, sadly, be the last album in that series. It will be released on February 26 on American/Lost Highway Records. The release date marks Cash’s would-be 78th birthday.
The album is said to include instrumentation from a number of additional musicians, including Matt Sweeney, Smokey Hormel, and The Avett Brothers (Scott and Seth Avett).
American VI will include a previously unreleased Cash-written song called “I Corinthians: 15:55,” but it will also showcase covers of songs such as “For The Good Times” by Kris Kristofferson, “Can’t Help But Wonder Where I’m Bound” by Tom Paxton, “Cool Water” by Bob Nolan, “Redemption Day” by Sheryl Crow, “Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream” by Ed McCurdy, “Satisfied Mind” by Jack Rose and J.H. “Red” Hayes, and a strangely appropriate cover of “Aloha Oe” by the Hawaiian Queen Lili’uokalani. This final installment of the series is, of course, produced by Rick Rubin.
