Lauren Mann began her musical career kicking around in Calgary, making friends wherever she went. Displaying her own unique take on orchestral pop, Mann soon gathered a following and people began to take notice of her talents, including local musicians–with whom she shared many stages. Shortly thereafter, she formed a loose collective of her musician friends who came to be known as The Fairly Odd Folk and so Lauren Mann & the Fairly Odd Folk was born. Toward the end of 2010, she decided to focus entirely on her musical career, and so she began an arduous touring schedule which took her to numerous cities across Canada and the United States. She released her unofficial first album Stories From Home–a collection of songs that she’d recorded over the previous four years–in that same year, and she’s been playing with The Fairly Odd Folk ever since.
Her latest record and official debut, the casually cathedral Over Land and Sea, is set to be released on April 9th via Wanderer Records. The gently persuasive songs on the record quietly but surely get underneath your skin and refuse to let go. Her wry sense of narrative, shimmering melodies, and wildly imaginative instrumentation all lend the album an older-than-its-years feel–while still maintaining an oddly endearing sense of naivety. This curious juxtaposition of lyrical whimsy and complex pop construction makes Over Land and Sea an album that slowly reveals itself over multiple listens, never content to give up everything all at once. You can head over to her own website now to pre-order the record, and be sure to check out her extensive list of upcoming tour dates below the album stream.
Beats Per Minute is pleased to premiere the album stream for Lauren Mann & the Fairly Odd Folk’s latest album Over Land and Sea.
