Ailsa Tully orbits her sense of self on the tactile “Mothering”

Ailsa Tully continues to gift us with beautiful singles like Easter bunny dishing out chocolate eggs. Following on from February’s “Salt Glaze”, the Welsh songwriter has now delivered “Mothering”. She says:

“’Mothering’ is about the distortion between the person you really are, and the person people want you to be. In our relationships, we tend to perceive others through the prism of our own experience and therefore fail to see beyond our own warped view. This is the first time I have explored creating drum parts with found sound, it feels very visceral and exciting, and a step in a new direction. I think it’s the rawest song I have ever made.”

Tully continues to move from strength to strength with each single, and “Mothering” continues that trajectory. It’s a slowly-building contemplation of the self, but not one that’s overwrought with stress – there’s no furrowed brows here, only Tully’s coolly inquisitive thoughts. She presents herself with several challenges, but the intimate sounds of plucked guitar strings and crushed percussion ensures they come across gently, before Tully bats them away with shimmering harmonies. She continues to build the song until her thoughts are tumbling out of her mouth and, on the beating wings of the ascending arrangement, seem to head hopefully upwards in search of greater understanding.
