Durham, North Carolina rock outfit Schooner has had a very turbulent history. Peddling their indie pop and psych-soul aesthetic for over six years now, the band has undergone a handful of dramatic roster shifts, leading up to the complete reboot of the band (except for founding member Reid Johnson) for the recording of their recent album,Neighborhood Veins. Bringing on Maria Albani, Joshua Carpenter, and Chris Badger to form the core of the newly reformed Schooner, Johnson also asked fellow North Carolina musicians Ivan Howard (The Rosebuds/GAYNGS), Phil Moore (Bowerbirds), Bob “Crowmeat” Pence (Dexter Romweber, D-Town Brass), and Jeff Crawford (The Old Ceremony, Roman Candle) to sit in on the sessions for the record. Brought to life by the passionate rhythmic perspectives and determination of the band and their guests,Neighborhood Veins pulses with a thudding musical heartbeat that echoes in your ears long after the last notes have faded back into your speakers.
The band has just released the Matt Hedt-directed video for Neighborhood-cut “Trap,” and it follows an anonymous guy around as he bikes from house to house, wading through parties with curiously similar looking party goers. The video takes on an extra depth of wonder when you realize that they are indeed the same people and that the video was a shot in real time – taking approximately one hour and fifteen minutes and covering 8 different locations. As soon as one party scene was filmed, the film crew would follow the biker while everyone else raced to beat the cameras to the next location. Add in the frenzied fretwork and memorable melodies reminiscent of post punks The Modern Lovers and a sense of caffeinated punk theatricality and you’ve got a song that wastes no time getting where it needs to go, giving the listener little choice but to strap in for the ride.
