Flying Ibex have a lot of influences to wear on their collective sleeves. Between the three of them – Barnaby Keen, Dave De Rose, and Nathaniel Keen – they can boast years of jazz playing, working with names likes Mark Ronson and Moloko, and performing as an improvisational church band that would make music for silent films. With lots of interests coming from lots of directions, it might be tricky to imagine where this all meets, where it all fits together, and where it can take them.
Fortunately the trio are far from shy, but they’re also noticeably sensible about the restraint they practice. Their new single “You Dared Me” is a fine example of this, fitting together swift, shuffling drumwork with Battles-esque guitar noodling, and above it all, Keen’s reggae-soaked voice slides like a tide coming closer and closer to shore. The band also boast a love of analogue equipment and technique, but “You Dared Me” sounds decisively lush if you come with that preconception in mind, glimmering like that aforementioned sea.
You’ll be able to find this piece of the ocean on 7″ from April 15th via Bomb Shop, but until it’s official release date comes around, we here at Beats Per Minute are proud to première the track and offer you the first listen.
