Chicago-born but New York City-based songwriter Drazy Hoops’ latest record This is the Sound of… chronicles the spiral into and climb out of a long night of hard living, intense introspection, and the eventual triumph over the obstacles which oftentimes land in front of all of us. The record documents events in such minute detail that it is almost impossible to think that these songs aren’t at least partially based on Hoops’ own experiences. And based on the fact that this is his 8th official album, I’m sure that he has plenty of material to pull from.
Ranging from riffs on classic Alternative music to more subtle meditative pop arrangements, Hoops employs a wide range of eclectic supporting musicians to fill in the musical gaps on the album. Co-produced by Gary Maurer of Hem, the album features pedal steel guitar from Bob Hoffnar (Iggy Pop, Lloyd Cole), violin from Karen Waltuch (Wilco, John Cale), and vocals from singers Brooke Behmke and Dawn Landes. Filled with Hoops’ own sly sense of humor and undiminished optimism, This is the Sound of… never feels anything less than direct and unabashedly affecting.
