Yep, you read that right. GZA intends to release Dark Matter this year, according to the man himself, inspired by scientific concepts. He explained to Rolling Stone, “I had several different ideas and concepts in my head. It’s just a journey of the universe. Dark matter, dark energy,” a “beautiful journey”, involving, “planets, black holes, and comets.” Only The Genius.
You may recall that the Wu Tang MC had previously declared Liquid Swords 2 was approaching. With the ever-changing climate that MC’s increasingly regarded as old school have to weather, it’s no surprise when plans change. However, looking back to an even earlier interview nearly two years ago, the MC had originally said another album may arrive before the sequel to his greatest classic. This is likely that album, evolved after his MIT visit.
The desire for a followup to his ultimate achievement is certainly immediately appealing, but it’s quite possible that venturing in a new direction, rather than trying to match Raekwon with a well-recieved sequel, may serve GZA better in the end. Stay tuned for more, but it’s likely to be later in the year before we here some actual music from this one.
