Tu Fawning are a band from Portland, Oregon, whose 2010 debut album Hearts on Hold held a lot of intrigue for me, as they seemed to be trying a style of dramatic-yet sultry cinematic indie pop that nobody else was doing. The results were sometimes spectacular, as on the single “I Know You Now” (especially when coupled with the video), but overall the album didn’t so much excite me as it left me more wondering what they were going to do next.
I now have the first part of my answer. With the announcement of a new album called A Monument the band have also decided to give away the 7+ minute closing track “Bones,” certainly keen to make an immediate impact this time around. The song finds the band getting themselves into a deep set groove, over which they can start to implement the various different atmospherics and instruments, which on this album ranges beyond the regular and incorporates “a ragini, a tuned-down marching band drum, old ’80s synths, and South American chant samples turned into chords.”
