Last year Primus re-assembled its original lineup when drummer Jay Lane rejoined them after many years apart, and they’ve been touring fairly consistently since. Not content to just tour and rely on their legacy to support them, the band has recorded a new album, called Green Naugahyde, which will be released on September 13th through ATO Records.
You may be wondering why it’s taken Primus 11 years to put out another record, but it seems the new album was more or less a spur of the moment thing, rather than premeditated, singer Les Claypool explains that it was more of a ‘Oh here we are, we should make a record,’ kind of situation.
The press release tells us that Green Naugahyde is “teeming with the band’s signature blend of whimsy and underlying darkness.” The album was produced by Claypool, who also claims that the re-addition of Jay Lane has given Primus a sound that harks back to their very early days, before they made it big.
Primus will play at Bonnaroo this weekend and support The Flaming Lips at Red Rocks, before setting out again on their own tour to support the new album this September.
