We’ve already been treated to one surprise new song by a British band on Domino in the form of Wild Beasts’ “Albatross” and now completely out of the blue we have “Brick By Brick” from Arctic Monkeys. We had heard that the group were working on a new record, hoping to get it out in late spring but not much since.
The new, as yet untitled, album is produced by James Ford who oversaw the two poppiest tracks on Humbug, “Secret Door” and “Cornerstone” and that pop influence continues here in what could be said to be Arctic Monkeys’ most straightforward pop rock song to date.
Not immediately recognisable as an Arctic Monkeys song because singer Alex Turner’s voice is seems a lot deeper, the Monkeys’ sound certainly comes through as the song progresses. And even better the desert-rock influence apparent on their last record is still here, particularly in the psych-rock break down in the middle.
