One band who seem to have been touring relentlessly over the past couple of years is Metric. Since the release of their 2009 album Fantasies they’ve probably been through your nearest major town at least three times. It’s unsurprising then that they’ve decided to release a live album, of sorts.
Rather than put out a fully produced document of Metric live in 2009-2010 the band have created an iTunes session, which seems to be quite a popular mode of releasing music these days. I’ve always been sceptical about the value of these sessions so haven’t checked out any previously but since Metric decided to make a video for one of the tracks from theirs – their cover of Buffalo Springfield’s “Expecting To Fly” – I have now been given a taste, and I have to say it is much more interesting than I thought it would be. The music is stripped down, quite different to Metric’s glossy studio output, and well produced so that even though you can tell it’s a live cut the sound is almost studio quality.
Take a listen for yourselves and simultaneously watch the visually arresting and quite beautiful video for “Expecting To Fly” below.
