The Wall Street Journal thinks so. In fact, they are claiming that the two major companies are very close to merging sometime soon. What does this mean? Well, essentially it means there will no longer be healthy competition in the ticket sales market. Now we will have a monopoly on the ticket industry – and yes, we will continue getting ticket fees!
When we originally heard that Live Nation was branching out on its own, the prospect of no longer having ticket fees for some shows was very appealing. Live Nation had recently signed big acts such as U2, Madonna, and Jay-Z. Live Nation was also signing artists to sell records through them. So it will be interesting to see how all these contracts work out. If they do merge, hopefully the new company will combine ideas from both ticket outlets.
