What could top rumored news that The Beatles would play the Hollywood Bowl with holograms? How about Neutral Milk Hotel returning.
Jeff Mangum, the reclusive creative force that recorded two albums under the moniker Neutral Milk Hotel in the nineties, performed at a Buchwick loft on Saturday night for a lucky seventy-five people. His set consisted of ten songs from his back catalog, performed solo. This is his second performance of the year, the first being a benefit for Chris Knox. Though this is a giant step in the right direction, a Pitchfork interview with Ben Goldberg made clear that nothing can be said about Mangum’s future based on this set. It was a low-key affair, which seems like the ideal atmosphere to witness these songs. Next stop, Coachella!
Here is the setlist from the evening and stay tuned tomorrow for a Smiths reunion. Update: Listen to half the set at International Tapes.
