Track Review: deadmau5 – “SOFI Needs a Ladder”

[Ultra; 2010]

Intended for December’s 4×4=12, “SOFI Needs a Ladder” first was heard at this year’s Coachella festival, played then with Tommy Lee on drums. The single is a raucous electro rave-up, contrived in every way but danceable and more usable, one might suppose, in such an arena. Included in the release are a the standard three-length variations on the same track where Lee’s girlfriend, Sofia Toufa (SOFI), yells all sorts of nonsense over a version of deadmau5’s unreleased “You Need a Ladder.”

The song is stripped of the Zelda-inspired goodness heard live in its predecessor. It’s an exercise that, if only for the vocal element, sounds a little bit better than the worst Ke$ha song you can think of. SOFI’s verses are another bunch of loops in deadmau5’s sequencer. They keep the fresher sound–deadmau5’s buzzing electro heard in his earlier Play Records work, from truly piquing excitement. With 4×4=12 coming soon and at least one other vocal track on the list, here’s to hoping all his DJ Hero cred hasn’t cluttered his house.
