Last month, a 34-year-old Nashville woman named Alyssa Lokits was sexually assaulted and shot in broad daylight while jogging on a greenway. Songwriter Jaryn Jones has a new song “Woman” that’s a memorial for Lokits and a rallying cry for women around the world.
“A few weeks ago, a woman was taken from this world,” says Jones. “She was cheated of life. It hit home for me. As a woman, I felt called to share my voice for those women who have felt left behind, forgotten, taken, abused, politicized, murdered. It’s a sad story, one that needs to be acknowledged and shared to demand change, to speak out so that we may not become numb to violence. This song is meant to carry the voices of women, to share our stories, to fight for our freedom.”
“Woman” begins with a hushed vocal that turns into a powerful, plaintive choir of women grieving yet another senseless loss while calling for sweeping change. It’s an unforgettable song that will both move and motivate listeners for years to come.
