Haley Heyderickx finds herself out of context on “Gemini”

Haley Heynderickx is releasing her new album – and first since her 2018 debut – on 1 November. As a final teaser of Seed of a Seed, she has shared the album’s opener “Gemini”.

The songwriter places herself in a space of confusion from the start of “Gemini”, grasping for a sense of self as she observes “a woman in the corner claiming she is just the former one of me / And I am here just out of context”. The sprightly indie-folk number takes off like a rabbit burrowing into its warren as Heynderickx delves deeper into her psychological state, discussing this alternate version of herself: “when I’ve gone too long without her / And I’m alone and I’m addicted to my phone / She cuts the cord she pulls the power”. There’s a chug to “Gemini” that is added by subtle upright bass and electric guitar, making the song ebb and flow with the vicissitudes of Heyderickx thought processes. It’s a deeply engrossing song that rides from choppy acoustic to regal and warm arrangements as Heynderickx goes from fidgeting uncertainty to gorgeous self-possession.
