London-based producer and vocalist Sega Bodega has returned with “Only Seeing God When I Come”, his first new material since last year’s breakthrough album Salvador.
A constantly growing and evolving song, “Only Seeing God When I Come” begins with Sega lamenting “Heaven is a place we won’t go / I can feel it fading for sure” over muted electronics. As he seems to find solace in the physical pleasures of another – “Heaven is the light in your eyes” – the production starts to perk up, first with some cold neon synths and then a minimal but propulsive beat. As Sega layers in more slick sounds, his words and emotions become more strung out – the desperation for escape into bliss mirrored by the more erratic and head-spinning electronics. As choral voices join, “Only Seeing God When I Come” begins to feel more hopeful, the sudden stunning beauty of the song re-calibrating its tone into something thankful, something present and engrossing – the overwhelming pleasure of sharing and investing oneself an intimate moment with someone.
