With only a few fantastic albums in their catalog, it’s hard to believe that LCD Soundsystem will be calling it quits–but according to frontman/creative force James Murphy, it’s true. He explained his decision to Zane Lowe (of BBC) recently:
“I feel good about it and really positive about it, it’s not like a negative thing,” Murphy said. “I think that its nice to feel like it’s the last one and we’ll tour really hard and then go do something else.”
If you were following Murphy on Twitter during the last few months, you might remember how stressed the guy seemed during the days prior to finishing the album. It’s entirely possible his decision was influenced by a bit of disenchantment with the entire process, as he seems to suggest in the following quote:
JM: […] In LA, I wasn’t really thinking about [this being the last album] at all. I was just like you know – make a record – kind of like ‘trying to make a record mode’. And then when I get back to New York it was getting to the end of it and all the other things started happening the typical ‘you gotta get your artwork in’ and all this other stuff. And I just decided it’s been a while since I wanted to worry about any of that stuff. So, as much as I love making the record and going on tour and everything like that , I was like ‘man If I have to worry about this stuff anymore’ …. You know. So it just seemed like perfect we’ll (the band) make this the last record and we’ll do exactly what we want and go out happy.
It will be upsetting to see LCD Soundsystem go, but perhaps Murphy, Pat Mahoney and co. will keep themselves busy with different projects in the future.
