Having recently returned with the blissful “Blossom”, Cornwall-based songwriter Eliza Shaddad has returned today with the news of her new album: it’s called The Woman You Want and arrives on July 16 via Rosemundy/Wow and Flutter. Along with the news, she’s also shared a new single called “Heaven”.
An about-face from the lulling sound of “Blossom”, “Heaven” finds Eliza Shaddad wielding her guitar like a weapon as her riffs scythe through the pervading pessimism of the modern day. “Have you ever felt like you’ve lost someone / even while they’re by your side?” she asks at the very start, but she’s not about to let these downcast ideas stop her from living. “Heaven” is a plea for us to do the same; “I know that life can be unkind and you’ve got heaven on your mind / but I want you to keep holding on,” she encourages in the chorus. Part friend, part life-coach, Shaddad is rousing and empathetic in “Heaven”, her rambling guitar and unwavering voice relaying the grit that you have to have to make it through this crazy world, while the delightful addition of harmonica acts like the light at the end of the tunnel. A song that stares life in the eye and has the bravery not to blink, “Heaven” is a truly uplifting and heartwarming anthem.
