Bergen-born, Liverpool-based songwriter Sara Wolff is building to the release of her debut EP When You Left The Room in the coming months. With the singles “Cotton Socks” and “You Like Talking About Yourself” already out in the world, we have the pleasure of bringing you a third taster of what’s to come in the form of “Bad Thoughts Compilation”. On the new track, Wolff reveals:
“’Bad Thoughts Compilation’ is a collection of all your feelings on a particularly bad day and reflects on why the solution is there but so difficult to reach. Those times you can’t get out of bed, you’re in a rut, sleep too long, don’t eat properly, scroll on your phone too much, cancel plans then feel bad about it, worry your friends won’t like you anymore, then stay in even longer. It’s a never-ending circle.”
Probably most of us have had those days where we can’t stop our mind from playing toxic thoughts and depressive ideas on a loop, gradually dragging us down to a point where we just want to crawl into bed and stay there. “Bad Thoughts Compilation” is a transmission from deep within this slovenly state, but while Sara sings of “last week’s crumbs stuck to your feet” and “getting down and out with this bad thoughts compilation,” the song itself is bright, melodic and alluringly sweet. Sara is taking a very compassionate approach to her mood, and even though she wonders “why am I like this?” she is not berating herself but just trying to be rational and move through it – “come on girl, get your clothes on!” By combining upwardly lilting guitar and vocal melodies with softly sparkling atmospheric adornments, “Bad Thoughts Compilation” magically subverts its subject matter and becomes a song of quiet and warm comfort. It’s that little necessary nudge from a friend just to knock you out of your slump, and a supremely catchy one too.
“Bad Thoughts Compilation” will be on streaming platforms and Sara Wolff’s Bandcamp from tomorrow. Wolff’s When You Left The Room EP should be arriving in the next month or so. To keep up to date with her, make sure you follow her on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
