This week sees the highly anticipated release of Florence + the Machine’s second album Ceremonials, and to promote its release she has returned to Later… With Jools Holland. Rather than perform the utter banger of a lead single “Shake It Out” she took the opportunity to shed light on two more of the album’s standouts “What The Water Gave Me” and “No Light, No Light.” This was probably a good idea since as good as “Shake It Out” is, it has become a bit overplayed recently what with remixes by The Weeknd and being used for HBO commercials.
Welch gives an understated performance, standing completely still while singing, which is surprising and considering how much criticism another artist got for doing the same thing on this very show just a few weeks ago, possibly unwise. However, there’s no arguing with her voice, and with this kind of backing it’s only augmented.
Also returning to Later… were My Morning Jacket on their quest to promote Circuital. They did a good job by busting out an electric performance of “Holdin’ On To Black Metal” with a full group of female backing singers.
