of Montreal finish work on new album, Lousy With Sylvianbriar

Even though it’s been just over a year since of Montreal released their last album (Paralytic Stalks), their camp has been anything but quiet. Between finding time to release a compilation album (Daughter of Cloud) and successfully fund a Kickstarter campaign to release a documentary, the band’s leader and mastermind, Kevin Barnes, has had time to record a new album. Barnes just updated his Tumblr page, stating that the new album is complete. Entitled Lousy With Slyvianbriar, the album was recorded at Barnes’ home-studio onto a 24-track tape machine. Regarding the sound he writes:

“It is pretty different from Paralytic Stalks. Definitely more G Parsons than K Penderecki this time around. I wrote most of the songs while on a self imposed isolation experiment in San Francisco earlier this year, and we recorded it, over a two week period, about a month after i got back to Athens. I was influenced by the poetry of Sylvia Plath (hence the reference in the title), plus artists like the Grateful Dead, Neil Young, Flying Burrito Brothers…”

Needless to say, despite all their past mishaps and inconsistencies on record, Lousy With Slyvianbrair sounds interesting. There’s no specifics about the track titles of artwork (though i’m sure it’ll be another zany piece by Kevin’s brother David), but there’s a mention in the post that it will be released in the fall. Stay tuned for more details.
