Introducing: S.C.U.M

S.C.U.M are a five-piece band from the UK that I’d heard a lot about while I was still over there, and it seems that I was not the only one, as the band have now made the leap on to renowned London-based indie label Mute; home to other such acts as M83, Liars and Grinderman. That is to say, Mute have quite a pedigree when it comes to their roster, and any addition should be taken seriously.

S.C.U.M. make synth heavy dance-rock music that is unafraid to make a sudden left turn into a more riff-oriented or shoegazey chorus. This erratic nature of their music keeps it incalculable, and this characteristic is expanded in their live show where singer Thomas Cohen’s non-stop and unpredictable moves are a beacon of inspiration for the audience, creating a party-like atmosphere in the crowd.

Again Into Eyes is the debut album from the quintet, produced by Ken and Jolyon Thomas, who have worked wth a number of large and wide-ranging acts including Sigur Ros, M83, and David Bowie. Again Into Eyes is set for release through Mute on October 4th, but there is plenty of music to check out right now to get yourself excited. The first official single is the energetic “Amber Hands,” that has a psychedelic video accompanying it, seen below. There’s also “Whitechapel,” due to be the next single from the album, which is described as ‘future-disco’. You can stream that below as well as the Light Asylum remix which gives the song a bit of a tropical dance kick.
