Purity Ring

I traveled down to Tampa this weekend to catch electronic pop favorites Purity Ring at the Orpheum, where the duo performed exactly one song that wasn’t on last year’s Shrines: a soulful RnB-ish number that was later identified, awesomely, as a cover of Soulja Boy’s “Grammy”, from the rapper’s third album The DeAndre Way. Judging from Youtube videos, the duo has apparently been performing the cover throughout the most recent leg of their North American tour — at this point all we can do is pray for a recorded version. Maybe they can get Soulja to jump on that banger “Belispeak” rework too. The possibilities are truly only as limited as the imagination. But even if nothing comes from it all, we finally have something to listen to alongside Beach House’s Gucci Mane cover, and that’s really all we can ask for.

Watch a video of Purity Ring performing the song in Atlanta below, and under that listen to Soulja Boy’s original.

Paris Hilton is a terrible DJ

By Andrew Bailey; June 25, 2012 at 12:11 PM

You don’t need any witty commentary to explain to you how awful Paris Hilton is at everything she does as a DJ. All you need to do is check out the video above, in which the hotel heiress and societal non-contributor makes a mockery of electronic music the world over by playing the same tired “club bangers” as every iTunes “DJ” you’ve ever heard. She also accidentally overlaps a beaten-to-death Rihanna song over one of her new “tracks,” which makes for quite the LOL.

Enjoy!

Awesome WTF: Why does “Myth” sound so familiar to me?

By Harrison Suits Baer; June 15, 2012 at 5:47 PM

Today it finally hit me.

So, for comparison, I present:

Beach House – “Myth” (2012)

and

Donkey Kong Country OST – “Aquatic Ambiance” (1995)

Some part of me wants to believe they borrowed their melody from an awesome SNES game, but this coincidence is pretty awesome either way.

WTF: Nas was going to hang Jay-Z at Summer Jam 2002

By Evan Kaloudis; June 12, 2012 at 11:24 AM

Apparently Nas was going lynch this Jay-Z effigy at Summer Jam in 2002. Hot 97 didn’t allow Nas to pull the stunt, thus why he dropped out of the festival. Imagine the implications if this actually happened.
