MP3: Slow Animal – Demo EP

Slow Animal are just another lo-fi pop band. No, I’m just messing with you. In fact, they stand out in the crowd (it’s a big crowd) of acts that could be categorized that way. Slow Animal’s four song demo EP gets a lot of play (perhaps an unhealthy amount) in my iTunes, and for good reason. The band, who I would be able to toss out some details about but for the fact that there is not all that much information about them available, can write a hell of a song.

The one detail you can learn from their MySpace is that they hail from the great state of New Jersey, which seems to be establishing itself as something of a hotspot as Garden State acts like Titus Andronicus and Real Estate have also found some success recently. The New York Times is in agreement with me.

Sometimes evoking earlier Ariel Pink albums, they trade the experimentalism of those releases for a tighter focus that results in some truly memorable pop music. Slow Animal also do some pretty good guitar work, which sets them apart from the sea of bands that use fuzz to cover up a lack of talent or originality.

The best part of all this? Slow Animal are offering their demos for free, right here. Download, enjoy.
