MP3: Secret Cities – “Boyfriends”

As the Fargo-founded indie-pop trio Secret Cities stands on the verge of releasing their newest album Pink Graffiti(July 20th via Western Vinyl), images of Brian Wilson not only resonate within their jangly, Beach Boys-derived sound, but are even heard among the first words within their despondent, whistle-filled anthem “Boyfriends.” Like their above mentioned influences, Secret Cities adeptly blend a happy-medium of light-hearted instrumentals with melancholic lyrical themes. As seen on “Boyfriends,” however, the trio is not simply a group of Wilsonian revivalists, rather their sound further recalls Grizzly Bear as well as a stripped down Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros (think “Janglin”).
