Kurt Vile & Sore Eros - Jamaica Plain

On the title track to Kurt Vile and Sore Eros’ upcoming EP, Jamaica Plain (out November 4th via Care in the Community Recordings), you get a sense that the duo wanted to revert back to the analog heyday of their musical heroes rather than trying to accentuate some modern idea of indie rock.  From their digital-free recording process to the gently finger-plucked melody that opens the song, “Jamaica Plain” is looking back in all the right directions.  And though the song never rushes through its billowing rhythms (it’s an extended instrumental track, after all), there isn’t a sense of complacency either.  As the song unfolds you begin to understand that both Vile and ex-Violators member Robert Robinson (aka Sore Eros) know exactly where they’re going to end up, but that they’re not in any particular hurry to get there.  And if they happen to come across acres of glistening guitar notes, Korg flourishes, and a not terribly incongruous drum machine, then that’s just fine too.  Listen to “Jamaica Plain” below.
