Listen: Kite Club – “Jupiter Smiling”

Kite Club - Jupiter Smiling

Melbourne-based indie pop five-piece Kite Club are set to release their latest album, Fresh Air For Humans, sometime later this year.   But until then, the band has released their newest single, “Jupiter Smiling,” from the album, and it has mid-90’s pop written all over it.  But in this context, that’s not such a bad thing.  While you may hear echoes of The Lemonheads and, dare I say, Gin Blossoms (and those are far from negative associations, trust me), not to mention a touch of late 80’s dream pop, Kite Club make this melodic pop sound work for them in nostalgic ways while still maintaining a sense of their own musical identity. Chiming guitars, layered harmonies, and an ear-hooked melody that climbs casually upward through the instruments, all point to the song’s ability to fashion something unique and memorable out of familiar strands of rhythm and tone.  Listen to “Jupiter Smiling” below.
