Watch: Floridas – “Another Place”

By Joshua Pickard; August 30, 2013 at 12:10 PM

Floridas - Cadboro

Hailing from a small island off the west coast of British Columbia, Floridas — aka multi-instrumentalist Tayler Thompson — creates music that floats somewhere between the languid instrumentalism of Youth Lagoon and the afro-pop sensibilities of Vampire Weekend.  His songs highlight the importance of continual movement and the resulting feeling of accrued momentum drives each track forward to some indefinable end.  Synths weave in and out of hazy melodies and half-glimpsed rhythms, but there is always a steady push toward some distant goal.  And while there is a tendency with music like this to veer into a casual aimlessness, Thompson keeps things undulating and shifting enough to never make it appear that the songs are simply treading water.

With the recent self-release of Floridas’ debut EP, Cadboro, Thompson has shared a video for album cut “Another Place.”  Consisting of seemingly random superimposed images, the video (produced and directed by ROOM) is a perfect fit for the song’s ever-shifting, capricious musical nature.  Weaving together strands of chiming guitars, restrained percussion, and buzzing synths, the track brings to mind dusky evenings on the beach and late-season summer days.  Check out the video for “Another Place” below.

Listen to/Download a massive mash-up tape by Dan Deacon, “Wish Book Volume 1”

By Ryan Stanley; December 3, 2012 at 6:41 PM

Well this is a nice surprise – Dan Deacon today released Wish Book Volume 1, a surprise mash-up tape comprised of 5 songs and a dizzying breadth of sample material. In his own words:

Hope you enjoy. Wish Book Volume 1 was made with music made by (in order of appearance): grimes+psy+beach house+skrillex+diplo+nicky da b+dirty projectors+lil wayne+nicki minaj+oneohtrix point never+tune yards+animal collective+rod stewart+the strokes+wiz khalifa+beyoncé+lcd sound system+death grips+ludacris+rihanna+the beatles+roy orbison+silver apples+katy perry+69 boyz+gary glitter+james brown+lmafo+black dice+the ronettes+r. kelly+black eyed peas+lenny kravitz+the misfits+2 chains+daftpunk+led zeppelin+the notorious b.i.g.+devo+lightning bolt+unknown artist recorded in jaipur, india+marvin gaye+radiohead+rage against the machine+salt n peppa+brian eno+madonna

In the span of the first track, which is literally titled “Gangrimes Style”, alone, you get some extremely rewarding segments pairing PSY with Beach House and Nicki Minaj with tUnE-yArDs – in other words, listen to this as soon as you possibly can.

Update: We’ve tagged and converted the soundcloud .wav files: download the mix in 320kpbs mp3.

Mixtape: Freddie Gibbs – Baby Face Killa

By Chase McMullen; September 25, 2012 at 1:04 AM

Almost signing with Shady Records in the mid-2000’s, Freddie Gibbs’ been waiting in the lanes for some time. Since pledging to Young Jeezy’s CTE, the Indiana MC has been on the come up, releasing notable – and borderline fantastic – projects in both 2010 and 2011, Str8 Killa No Filla and Cold Day in Hell, respectively.

He’s been hyping up his latest project, Baby Face Killa, for quite a while now, and it’s finally here. Boasting features from label boss Jeezy, Jadakiss, SpaceGhostPurrp, Dom Kennedy, and Houston legend Z-Ro, this one isn’t to be missed.

Head over to Datpiff for a free download.

Also available today if you’re a supporter with money to burn, is a tagless/no DJ version, available on iTunes. Support a great hip hop artist, whether with your money or your time.

Mixtape: Flying Lotus – Lovers Melt 3

By Colin Joyce; July 26, 2012 at 11:33 PM

Though the timing isn’t nearly as patriotic as last year‘s entry in Flying Lotus’ Lovers Melt mix series, FlyLo has, as promised, delivered yet another beautiful mix of summery jams. Check it out over at the Brainfeeder site or download it at Sendspace.

Flying Lotus’ next record, Until The Quiet Comes, isn’t due out until October 2nd, so hopefully this mix will ease the wait a bit.

Mixtape: Lloyd Banks – V6

By Chase McMullen; July 24, 2012 at 12:00 PM

The wait is over – after a lengthy delay, Lloyd Banks releases his latest mixtape, V6. Features include Schoolboy Q, Fabolous, and Jadakiss: so get on it! Banks has also promised a surprise within the tape, rumored to be either Meek Mill or Eminem. My money’s on the former, but we can all hope for the latter.

Banks may once have been known as simply G-Unit’s strongest lyricist, but the farther 50 Cent pushes him away, the more room he has to assert his own role in hip hop, as Kanye West says himself, a top 5 MC. They don’t call him the Punchline King for nothing – stop sleeping.

Download: GRANT – Beat Tape, Vol. 1

By Colin Joyce; July 9, 2012 at 11:17 AM

I’ve spent the majority of the last couple of months in Central Florida and though the local scene can seem pretty dire at times, the acts on local electronic label Relief In Abstract have been a major bright spot. Their latest release comes courtesy of 17-year-old beatmaker Grant Peyton. With a full length out this year already under his GRANT moniker and a production credit on fellow Floridian Kitty Pryde‘s debut EP, it’s clear that the kid stays busy as his latest effort hit bandcamp last Friday. His sample based beats land him somewhere in some bizarre middle ground of the Shlohmos and Teebses of the world and his beloved trap rap producers. It’s 18 minutes of smooth jazzy samples layered with clattering drum hits and a few listens in it sounds as moving as the work of producers many years his senior. Check out Beat Tape, Vol 1 (featuring an instrumental take of his Kitty Pryde collab) below or head on over to GRANT’s Bandcamp for a free download.
