Lone returns with the sublime “Hidden By Horizons” and announces first album in five years

At the start of his career, British producer Dan Cutler aka Lone released six albums in a span of eight years, but he now hasn’t put out an LP since 2016’s Levitate – but that will all change when he releases his new album Always Inside Your Head on October 22 through Greco-Roman. Unsurprisingly, given the long break between records, this new one will see something of a stylistic shift, with Cutler saying:

“I wanted to approach a range of different styles, but attack them from their angle in a way, so for example on ‘Inlove2’ I tried to imagine what a Balearic / acid house tune might sound like if it were produced by Kevin Shields.”

Unfortunately, after tantalising us with that description of “Inlove2”, he instead offers as the lead single the album opener “Hidden By Horizons”, which features Morgane Diet on vocals. Fortunately, it’s absolutely sublime, and the influence of dreampop – particularly Cocteau Twins – is certainly palpable in the expansive washes of pastel synths that continually expand and retract through the song. His usual start-stop beats are present, locking in then dropping out, making the feeling of floating on air even more blissful. Diet’s vocal is the icing on the cake, as she verbalises the sublime, impossible-to-capture feeling that’s evoked in this tune.
