I dunno, when I first heard Kingdom I associated it with Todd Edwards, who's influenced UK producers, sure, but his music is decidedly US garage. You are right, he's been adopted by the Night Slugs crew but that's more cos he's a good garage house producer and they're all into house right now, and garage used to be quite big here, apparently.

Hi Jakeob,

I know that Sam has already commented but since I wrote the Kingdom review I might as well chime in here as well; I realize that Kingdom is American but I was introduced to him through the UK scene and his music is very much aligned with the house music happening in the UK right now, both in stylistic terms and in terms of who he's associated with -- keep in mind that Kingdom is doing remixes of all sorts of UK artists and there are several remixes by UK artists on the single. I never said that he was from the UK, and I think it would be incorrect to say that his music has no relevance or context inside the UK house scene.

As for the dubstep thing, you're right, and I agree the name of the column can be a bit of a misnomer at times, but you can't argue that the UK house scene (among others) has become inextricably linked and intertwined with the dubstep/bass scene(s) and simply referring to it as 'dubstep' is much easier than The Month In Dubstep/House/UK Funky/Bassline/Garage, you know? And in terms of the Kingdom EP specifically, most of the tracks are at 140bpm, which as you said is quite fast, and is a tempo more associated with dubstep than anything else!

As for not hearing a D1 tune... no one can hear everything at one time. I'd prefer honesty over pretension.

Cheers for reading though! :) I hope you enjoy next month's, and perhaps I should make it clearer that it's not strictly 'dubstep'

Hey Jakeob,

Yep - that was my first D1 tune. Since then I've dug back and found some amazing stuff, particularly V3 and Missin'/Cocaine/Firin' Blanks. I'm not necessarily an expert who knows everything about the history of dubstep, but I do love the music (especially some of these new tangents it's veering off in) and hopefully that comes through in the writing more than my encyclopedic knowledge of every Tempa 12" released since Horsepower Productions.

As far as Kingdom goes, I suspect that the dubstep link comes via the Night Slugs remix hookups (and, let's be honest, there's so much cross-pollination going on at the moment, that 'dubstep' is just a convenient, catch-all term).

only just heard a D1 tune? wow...

...and the Kingdom reviewer is clearly unable to fact check, or even listen properly to the music. Kingdom is from the US, and as far as I know had never been a dubstep producer, and I don't think he's even associated with that scene. His music is undoubtedly house music, albeit fast, akin to bassline/speed garage or Todd the God. The use of Shyvonne as a vocalist is probably due to the fact they're both from New York (and she has a good voice)
