Townshend also said within the last few years that Daltrey was singing better than he ever had before, so he's not necessarily very reliable when it comes to discussing his own band.

I completely understand those who find the performance subpar, I just thought it was decent. I thought they sounded fine for a fair portion of the material, but it was by no means a stellar performance.

Yeesh I couldn't disagree more Jason. I thought the Who were simply pathetic, and I'm a huge Who fan. The thing is, I'm not unrelasitic. I understand that bands get old with age and they will never sound like they did in their youth. To wish that, would be..foolish. But at the same time, Daltry was out of breath trying to finish sentences (not even hard vocal parts) - to me, it was just embarassing to see them up there struggling. I feel like if you are in a band, and it gets to the point that you can no longer perform your material adequately - you should not do it. Townshend has even went on some rants before where he said they were no longer the Who. And it's true - they are not.

I guess that's just me though. I personally thought the performance was really bad, especially in comparison to past ones.

I think you're being a little too harsh to the Who. You're right that Roger struggled on Baba O'Riley and WGFA, which by no means is a small complaint, but I felt performed well on the rest of the songs. I thought overall it was a decent showing, even if it didn't live up to the performances of the Who that I've seen (which, coincidentally was also about three years ago). I'm completely on board for the bigger point about the NFL being extraordinarily conservative about who plays the halftime show. Goodell is certainly not going away from that formula for awhile, but he's hardly the only problem. Many of the team owners too don't want a repeat of the nipplegate, not so much because of the actual 2 seconds of nudity, but because it's still being talked about. Once the all the A and B listers are used (and assuming they don't go for repeats on the ones that are still alive to do so), it'll be a good 10 years plus removed from the actual event. Of course at that point some of the non-dinosaur acts will be entering their nostalgia phase; perfect for the NFL.
